Charlotte Gainsbourg (Nymphomaniac) and Chiara Mastroianni (Augustine) star as two sisters entangled by a twist of fate into loving the same man. Marc, a tax inspector, misses his train back to Paris and meets a beautiful stranger, Sylvie (Gainsbourg). After just a few hours together, they know they are meant to be together forever. But fate intervenes, and their connection is cut short. Later, Marc has met and fallen in love with Sophie (Mastroianni) - without realizing that she is Sylvie's sister. The sisters' mother (Catherine Deneuve, Mastroianni's real-life mother) presides over the enfolding drama when Marc comes home with Sophie and the situation is revealed. Director Benoit Jacquot (Farewell, My Queen; The Counterfeiters) has created an emotionally charged parable of love lost and found again - perhaps too late. - Pia Chamberlain
