The exotic island of Trinidad becomes a place where couples discover their marriages need more nursing than their poolside cocktails.
Sonia and her two children arrive to join her husband in their new home, where he has already been living for a year with his work as an oil engineer. Sonia quickly becomes aware the businessmen living here may live in houses, but they are truly homeless with work moving them to new cities every couple of years ? and their wives with little choice but to follow. This culture clash ? along with the discovery of her husband?s affair ? weighs on Sonia?s increasingly fragile mental state, and the once tropical paradise becomes more like a prison.
Line Verndal superbly portrays a once self-reliant woman battling her consuming inner demons, while Lene Endre (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and Bryan Brown (Breaker Morant, Gorillas in the Mist) offer brilliantly nuanced performances as another couple struggling in their own way. Maria Sødahl?s feature debut journeys to a country far from home for a gripping drama about love, betrayal and desperation.
