Hunting of Man

Running time: 88 mins

A man paces nervously around a police station. The rain pounds outside. Finally, he sits down, lights a cigarette, and talks to the officer. "This all started 15 years agoÉ when my brother, Simon, first learned to kill." And so Pete recalls the events leading up to the fateful night that brought together his volatile brother with his former pal, Omar, now a vicious loan shark. Brought up on rifles and hunting, Simon has developed a taste for guns to go along with his short temper. Will Pete be able to foil his brother's revenge plans, or will Simon act out his idea that "there's no hunting like the hunting of man?" Writer-director Joe Menendez's invigorating Hunting of Man is a powerful suspense yarn as well as an affecting look at personal honor and brotherly devotion. Mingling subtle filmmaking with outstanding performances (and a beautiful musical score by Bay Area raised Kurt Kuenne), it is one of the most promising debuts in years. - Fernando F. Croce
