Your Name Poisons My Dreams
Running time: 122 mins
Tu Nombre Envenena Mis Suenos (Your Name Poisons My Dreams) is a murder mystery. Built like a puzzle, the film cuts through two decades of war and two stories of love, beginning with a meeting between mathematics professor Angel Barciela (Carmelo Gomez of the film Tierra screened at Cinequest VII) and police officer Francisco Valduque (Angel de Andres). Both men are on their way to attend the funeral of a man named BuendO-a, whom they had interrogated in 1942 when they were police officers working together on an alleged suicide. The film returns to that year, when Barciela and Valduque started on the case. It is then that Barciela meets the sexy Julia Buendia (internationally acclaimed Emma Suarez), with whom he falls madly in love. Julia definitely turns heads with her fashion, style and grace. Julia takes Angel back a few years more to when she was an adolescent during the war. And we follow her through her recollections of that time, through her relationship with a young communist (Toni Canto) and through her connection to a fascist group known as the -'Fifth Column'. --Phillip Harris
