Oui Non

Running time: 76 mins

Cinequest is proud to present Oui Non, from noted independent director Jon Jost. A Parisian romance mixed with an experimental essay, it features the striking, experimental impressionism that?s always been a staple Jost, along with an intellectual airiness reminiscent of the classics of the French New Wave.

?Four million souls, within each a story of their own,? the narrator intones, as we step into Jost?s Paris. The two souls whose story we follow are Georgette, a photo agency archivist, and Gerome, who studied acrobatics with the circus. They meet at a café, and soon embark on a tour of the City of Lights in search of love and connection.

However, despite the romantic set-up, Oui Non is far from ordinary. Using a vast array of film techniques, from slow-motion to split-screens to genre-bending interviews, Jost subverts expectations by creating a dreamy mood of yearning and loss, combining elements from cinema, literature, and painting. While the characters search for each other, Jost considers the very medium that may bring them together.

A feast for the emotions and the intellect, Oui Non is one of Cinequest?s most unique experiences, and one of its must-see offerings this year.
