Maladaptive

Running time: 93 mins

?Maladaptive,? according to psychiatrists, is to fall helplessly in love even when you know it won?t work. That?s the notion at the heart of Maladaptive, Adam Chin?s wise and lovely comedy about how far romantic yearning can go.

?I?m in love,? thirtysomething Emily exclaims to her friends, the middle-aged couple, Graham and Abby. Trouble is, her new beau, Stuart, is still going to high-school. More trouble still, Graham is completely smitten with Emily, and is already planning to leave his wife and move in with their friend, though he still hasn?t said anything to either. Add to the mix Emily?s suicidal ex-boyfriend, Roger, full of problems of his own, and you have a web of relationships ready to spin out of control.

Maladaptive is the exceptional feature film debut of Adam Chin, whose award-winning independent work in both cinema and animation extends back a decade. With humor and a rare sensitivity to the possibilities of love, the film shows how thin the line between comedy and drama can be when emotions are at the stake.
