Life of a Maverick - Bethany Hamilton

Running time: N/A

Born into a family of surfers on the island of Kauai, Hawaii in 1990, Bethany began surfing at a young age. At the age of eight, Bethany entered her first surf competition winning both the short and long board divisions. At thirteen, Bethany was attacked by a 14-foot tiger shark leaving her with a severed left arm and the loss of over 60% of her blood. Through her incredible faith and positive spirit, Bethany returned to the waves just one month after the attack and continued to pursue her dream of becoming a professional surfer. In 2004, Bethany?s return to the competitive surfing world landed her 5th Place in the Open Women?s division which led on to numerous other titles. In 2007, Bethany turned pro and has since taken multiple awards worldwide.

In just 20 years, Bethany has grown from a young girl with big dreams into a professional surfer who has become a beacon of inspiration and hope ? finding ways to touch the lives of many with her charitable efforts and overall strength of spirit. Bethany recently launched her foundation Friends of Bethany, which supports shark attack survivors, traumatic amputees and serves to inspire others through her life story.
