Shorts Program 3: Lost and Found
Running time: 114 mins
The best cinema provides connection and escape. In this series of short films, ranging from lyrical to devastating, we evade external menace and internal demons to find acceptance, humanity, joy and love. We are captivated by the secret, intense culture of children playing in The Game, oblivious to distant adult concerns of war. The troublesome Liberian orphan who is Son of None, adorably chases an escaped baby goat through an empty church. A hard-boiled South African boy searches for understanding in a world without adult guidance in Protect the Nation. The child protagonist of the fantastic Almaritsu leaves his sad and lonely life to transport himself and the audience into a place of joy, whimsy and love. Hangnail features brilliant performances in a single long take, ravaging its characters who so badly need comfort. And North Atlantic elegantly and movingly connects two strangers via radio during a doomed final flight.- Marya Murphy
