Applied Materials Pacific Basin Showcase

Running time: N/A

The Pacific Basin Showcase, presented by Applied Materials, spotlights films and filmmakers from all over Asia and the Pacific, with specific emphasis on films from China and the Chinese Diaspora. The recent popularity of films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has demonstrated the demand that exists in American society for imaginative, original, first-rate cinema from the Eastern world. Cinequest has long known that innovative maverick films are in no short supply in that area of the world, yet mainstream America knows little else of these cultures than what is presented-and often parodied or stereotyped-in kung-fu action films. The five films selected for the Pacific Basin Showcase represent a part of the wide spectrum of subject matter explored by contemporary Asian filmmakers. It has always been the vision of Cinequest to further independent filmmaking by providing film lovers with increased access to maverick cinema, and the Pacific Basin Showcase endeavors to do just that. By giving these filmmakers a forum in which to exhibit their work, Cinequest hopes to give audiences a truer portrait of Asian filmmaking. Ge Ge (Hong Kong), The Orphan of Anyang (China), Metamorphosis (China), Firefly Dreams (Japan), The Compensation (Sri Lanka). And make sure not to miss these Maverick Competition screenings: Laundry (Japan), Pilgrimage (India).
