Cinequest made its name celebrating the maverick. Black filmmakers have consistently demonstrated a unique tradition of stepping outside of the norm, leaping over boundaries to create cinema that epitomizes the maverick spirit both culturally and aesthetically. This spirit is exactly what Cinequest is all about and we are eager to celebrate the world-class films of African/African-American artists who embrace the maverick spirit. With this in mind, Cinequest is proud to present the Black Maverick Filmmaker Showcase (BMFS). Seldom will one experience such a unique and powerful event featuring films, filmmakers, social activists, media and film industry representatives who will all come together to entertain, educate, provoke thought and spark change in the world of black filmmaking. Be sure to catch Spike Lee as he makes his way from the East coast to the West coast and enters our world, Silicon Valley, to receive the Cinequest Maverick Spirit Award. Don't miss out on living history as the Legendary Civil Rights Activist, Angela Davis takes a stand once again, moderating a panel entitled: Have Things Changed: Black Portrayals In The Media. Panelists set to attend are Gina Dent, Jamie Williams (San Francisco 49ers, Any Given Sunday), Elayne Fluker (Arts & Entertainment Editor, Essence Magazine), Doug E. Doug (Cosby), Angela Northington (Vice-President, Urban Entertainment). What will they say? Have things changed? Find out what this powerhouse panel is thinking. Catch a glimpse of the future of filmmaking as you experience life and culture through the eyes of the African-American filmmaker. Question Cosby's Doug E. Doug about his career and the making of his first feature film, Citizen James, immediately following the screening. Meet local director Lawrence Andrews who studied an incredible rehabilitation program in the Bay Area called The Medea Project, and created a wonderful documentary that will bring you to tears of sorrow and joy.
