In the 90's, all minds turn to one thing: gay and lesbian cinema. Well, that's an exaggeration, but Disney has certainly become "gay-friendly." A must see film is Cavafy (National Award for Best Greek Film in 1997), a dramatic portrayal of the famous Greek poet and his turbulent and closeted life. His life is both tragic and inspiring. Filled with eroticism and beautiful imagery, Cavafy is not only for the gay and lesbian community, but for all who love literature and poetry. For your viewing pleasure, also selected are Out at Work and It's Elementary, both stunning explorations. Out at Work looks at the lives of three out individuals and their struggle for acceptance at work. It's Elementary takes an amazing look at teaching elementary students about the gay and lesbian community. Surprisingly candid and objective, the youth of America has some enlightened views of the lesbigay community. We round out our selection with Defying Gravity, the story of Griff, a frat boy, his budding relationship with a guy named Pete and his ensuing denial. Heartwarming and thought provoking, it is one to watch. Also we have some electric shorts leading the features. With the support of the Billy DeFrank Lesbian and Gay Community Center, Cinequest has realized the importance of the growing gay and lesbian community in the Santa Clara Valley. Our Event evening features two wonderful films-the hysterical short My Body about a man whose "inner gay self" has made an escape, and he has mere hours to choose whether to be in or out. We then present the wonderful feature Neptune's Rocking Horse about five witnesses to a drag queen's arrest and how their lives subsequently change. We celebrate the inclusion of the gay and lesbian community with an special night celebration at Mary's. Spectacular event features comedian Carmen McKay, DJ Black, go-go dancer BeBe, and other Bay Area dancers from JADED No MSG Production. Be there on the big night, see the films, meet some of the people involved in production and have a blast at Mary's! It's an evening of fun and a great way to start on a high note. - Chris Lion. Event Screening: Friday, Jan. 30, 7:30pm Party Follows at Mary's 170 W. St. John. Screening & Party $15.
