Asian Celebration

Running time: N/A

No other area of the world has received more acclaim over the past decade for its achievement in filmmaking than Asian. So it is fitting to present a line-up that is representative of the diversity and quality of Asian film. Perspectives represented will include Japanese, Mainland Chinese, Thailand, Singapore, Filipino, Chinese-American, and Japanese-American. The Asian Celebration opens with a funny and insightful film about the difficulties in interracial relationships: director Takaya Yamazaki's I'm Not Cooking Tonight. The rest of the selection is as follows: An eye-opening behind the scenes docudrama about one of the world's most infamous locations Singapore's Bugis Street. A moving and visually beautiful drama about two Mandarin women who are trying to make a go of it in the West: Chinese Chocolate. The film that swept all of the Thai Academy Awards: Once Upon A Time. A terrific film about the role that women play in war: Their Own Vietnam, which will be featured as part of the Identity Crisis series of shorts. An entertaining film about Filipino women and their extraordinary historical journey from Priestess to President: Spirit's Rising. A charming crowd-pleaser about a Japanese man who idolizes American cowboys and a Western woman who is his pen-pal, Tokyo Cowboy. These stand-out films make for a promising debut for San Jose's Asian Celebration.
