United States Premiere Paul Sarossy (cinematographer of The Sweet Hereafter, Exotica, Affliction) delivers a powerful and visually stunning film in his directorial debut, Mr. In-Between. Jon, a hired assassin whose impressive reputation precedes him, is slowly coming to grips with the moral implications of a multitude of unspeakable sins. Entrenched in his subterranean world of murder, drugs, and isolation, Jon is wrenched out of his soulless reverie when he runs into Andy, an old school friend who lives with his beautiful wife, Cathy, and daughter, Kirsty, but has fallen on hard times. Andy and Cathy embrace Jon into their lives, and Jon arranges for Andy to get some much-needed work fixing cars. Tragedy befalls the trio when a freak accident at the garage makes Jon begin to realize that his two worlds are irreconcilable. Remarkable set design, superlative editing, and a haunting soundtrack deftly weave together Jon's dual realities. Peter Waddington's screenplay is understated but speaks volumes about the film's themes of free will, morality, salvation, and love. With an ending that will leave audiences enthralled, Mr. In-Between explores what happens when one inhabits that peculiar world existing between good and evil. Reviewed by Maya Kroth
