The Bay Area is home to a robust, fiercely independent film community, and Cinequest takes great pleasure in presenting the best, most exciting examples of the talent that surrounds us.The series includes work by director Pam Walton (Call to Witness, Cinequest 2000) and her look at dealing with disease in Death and Life. Breakin' the Glass covers the late, lamented San Jose Lasers, women's professional basketball league, which provided much-needed role models for not only young girls but also how a professional sports team should be run. Rachel Antell's A Fortune in Change looks at the unlikely benefactor of the Women's Building of San Francisco. Svetlana Cvetko's No War is a reflection from a recent Bay Area arrival on the lingering effects of war in the former Yugoslavia. Experimental films in this series include La Llorona by Trina Lopez, remembering folklore from her childhood, and Chip Lord's surf music goof, El Livahpla, on the French New Wave classic, Alphaville.
