At Midnight and a Half (A la Media Noche y Media)

Running time: N/A

With the threat of a catastrophic tidal wave large enough to destroy their city, citizenry of an Oceanside town evacuate, causing a traffic jam that seems to last forever. Sebastian is trying to get out for reasons of his own that are no less mysterious than pressing. On his way, he meets a strange little girl who has become separated from her family. While the dynamic between the rather cynical Sebastian and the apocalypse-obsessed child seems facile at first, they develop a peculiar bond while driving through the mostly-deserted streets. The city itself is transformed into a strange game board by the girl, who believes that she can avert the end of the world by winning points, with Sebastianis help, as well as by curing the various idisequilibriumsi she discovers. Also in the empty city is Ana, an imperturbable photographer and artist who views the worldis passion through a camera lens. She has a past with Sebastian, which includes more questions than answers, and is still a participant in the strange games both seem to be playing with the world and each other. Writers/directors Mariana RondUn and MaritE Ug.s have created a story of love, catastrophe, and bizarre mind-games: a rare example of cinema that manages to be both profound and atmospheric, bathing the desolate city and its inhabitants in foreboding yet hopeful light and sound. At Midnight and a Half is a treat for the senses as well as the mind. Preceded by: Dirty Laundry. The washing machineis spin cycle leads a young girl on the path to discovering her sexuality.
