Lyle Maze is confused. An obsessive/compulsive New York artist with Tourette Syndrome, Lyle is in love with Callie. But Callie has a boyfriend, Mike, who is a doctor on a seven-month humanitarian mission in Africa. To make matters worse, Mike and Lyle are best friends, and Mike doesn't know what Lyle knows. Callie is pregnant, and with her boyfriend's constant travel, a lot more vulnerable than she lets on. It seems only natural that Lyle becomes Callie's support and her best friend. Each grows closer to the other, as their souls are laid bare and their individual worlds come together. However, when Mike learns that he is a father and returns home, the conflict comes to a head. A star-studded cast of Rob Morrow (Northern Exposure), Laura Linney (You Can Count on Me and Truman Show), and Craig Sheffer (A River Runs Through It) compellingly portray their characters in a manner that makes them all too human, with the same foibles fate deals us all. Rob Morrow also makes his directorial debut with this alternately comic, awkward and heartbreaking romance that beautifully balances a man's bout with Tourette's and an unquestionable love for the two most important people in his life. Maze is a film that, not only proudly portrays the experience and energy that Morrow has learned to bring to his carefully drawn characters, but also is a film that skillfully paints a canvas wrought with emotional detail. --Sandy Wolf
