Director Kurt Kuenne first appeared at Cinequest in 1996, with his award-winning short film, Remembrances. It is fitting that IMAGE and Cinequest should present his feature film debut, Scrapbook. Scrapbook is the story of Curt Martin, a high school sophomore struggling to find his place in the world. Curt has a close relationship with his older brother, Andy, a popular senior who tries to help him out with his school and social life. Most of Andy's help turns out to be futile, but on one occasion, it is disastrous. A war ensues between the brothers. Curt's retaliation turns into an event of life-altering proportions. The strong performances from the young cast carry the emotional weight of Scrapbook. Justin Urich (Third Rock from the Sun and the upcoming sequel to Carrie) gives a complex and moving portrayal as Curt. He's matched by Eric Balfour (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dawson's Creek) as Andy. Director Kuenne's expert handling of the story's emotional tone is like that of a seasoned veteran director, rather than the first-time filmmaker he is. It will remind one of the films Stand By Me and Dead Poets Society. In addition, Kurt also did the editing, sound design and music score. This is an accomplished first feature by a filmmaker with a long and fruitful career ahead of him. --Ken Karn
