Without dreams, human existence is meaningless. Pepito's dreams, however, are perhaps outside of his means. He yearns for life in the big city, but his mother, Rosa, is determined that Pepito, her only child, will carry on her legacy. Rosa is the only midwife in the whole district, and for years, the skills needed to deliver babies have been handed down from generation to generation. Pepito does not mind learning this talent, but as he grows older, he discovers that midwifery is traditionally reserved for women and begins to feel uncomfortable. As fate would have it, Rosa's scandalous lifestyle soon leaves Pepito with an incredible responsibility. Over the course of the next few years, Pepito's desires for a new life grow, as does his interest in love, but as always, he sees those to whom he is closest leave the island for what he determines is a better life. In the Navel of the Sea never allows itself to slide into excessive melodrama and observes quietly but sharply the vivacity of a beautiful culture. More importantly is how director Marilou Diaz-Abaya finds the most genuine performances in her actors, who are a mixture of professionals and local people. A seasoned director, she finds the truest spirit of the Philippines in this beautifully told story of love, loyalty and finding yourself. --Mike Rabehl
