Sweet Jane

Running time: N/A

Tony is another statistic in that population dying of AIDS. He is alone, his brother dead from an overdose, mother also dead from AIDS, father in jail. But one day, upon looking out of his hospital door window, he sees the brilliant aura of Jane - his angel and saviour. Escaping from the pediatric ward, Tony sets out to follow the light which will, hopefully, ease his pain. Jane, however, has her own probems and does not need the extra baggage which accompanies Tony. Jane, a heroin addict, earns her drug money via a peep show. Needless to say, their relationship embarks on a rocky note, but it soon evolves into something pure as both begin to recognize the mutual benefit of their friendship. Unlike most films dealing with the trials of AIDS and drugs, Joe Gayton's Sweet Jane does not focus on lives of dispirited characters. Instead, a wonderful script, Samantha Mathis (Broken Arrow) and Joseph Gordon Levitt (3rd Rock From The Sun) breathes new life into some very familiar characters, recalling some of Gayton's favorite films from the 70s, such as Midnight Cowboy and Badlands. --Mike Rabehl
