Imagine you're a police detective put in charge of protecting a prostitute who it turns out has been blackmailing respected lawyers, honorable judges, one of your country's cabinet ministers, and most importantly your superiors. What do you do? That's the rock and the hard place where Detective Gauthier finds himself in Jean-Marc Vallee's noirish powerhouse LISTE NOIRE. After a judge receives death threats, a grisly murder is committed, and the prostitute, Gabrielle, is attacked, detectives Gauthier and Laberge are hot on the case. As Gauthier and his partner gather evidence in their case, they come too close to the real secret and are ordered off the investigation. This doesn't stop the young, headstrong Gauthier, however, as he decides to continue protecting the prostitute, Gabrielle, and soon finds himself and her the targets of the entire government. LISTE NOIRE sets itself up as a top-notch thriller from the opening credits and does not halt it's ride of suspense through a world of murder, deceit, power, immorality, and beautifully crafted Hitchcockian-twists until the very end when the detective and the prostitute ....... well, you'll have to see for yourself. --Mike Rabehl
