World PremiereA cheeky and refreshingly acerbic take on the universe of behind-the-scenes filmmaking, Steve Staso?s Celluloid #1 offers a hilarious and multilayered peak into the world where people lose, and find, themselves in the pursuit of illusion. Half exposé of today?s cult of celebrity and half grungy version of Day for Night, the film remains wholly unique in its style and insights.
Hollywood can be tough on high-strung geniuses. Once the renegade darling of underground cinema, director Clayton Beaubien now sees himself reduced to hitting the celebrity red carpet for crumbs of recognition. Not to be outdone, the fading auteur decides to turn his own hanging-on position into the subject of his latest project: a conceptual piece on empty glamour.
Clayton finds his perfect subject as soon as starlet Caprice Geoffrey totters into his makeshift studio on 5? heels, packing more celebrity issues than an entire year?s worth of gossip magazines. Wedged between director and star is Cyndi, Caprice?s strong-willed manager, who is determined to protect her client?s image from the filmmaker bent on destroying it. As the project unravels, so do the characters. Will they be able to finish the film before resources run out? Before they kill each other?
