World PremiereOn a small island just off the coast of Maine, the daily catch is life, and three generations of Pritchard lobstermen have built one on it. In recent years, however, the catches have been slow and the sea is not yielding what she used to. And in the midst of the worst border dispute with Canadian fisherman in years, a shy Canadian woman, Darcie, moves in next door, shifting the mood of the Pritchards and the entire island.
Old rivalries resurface when each of the men vies for Darcie?s attention. When the eldest Pritchard, Tobey, is stricken with Alzheimer?s, however, Darcie ends up a lot more involved than she planned when she becomes Tobey?s caretaker, and the entire family must weather the shifting climate, the struggling business and the mounting medical bills.
Director Jim Cole?s Sundowning is a brilliant story of betrayal, loyalty, self-sacrifice and reconciliation. Minor Rootes delivers an inspired performance as Old Tobey in this vivid and beautiful film about the meaning of family and the sacrifices you make for it.
