Song Of Songs

Running time: 76 mins

Childhood, first love, a way of life. Things lost grow ever more precious in our memory. In a Ukrainian village at the beginning of the twentieth century, young Shimek weaves tales of wonder and magic for his beloved Buzya. They are neighbors, and in his tales they are prince and princess—they will be together forever. But they are also children, and sometimes life has other plans. Based on stories of Sholem Aleichem (who also wrote Fiddler on the Roof) and the celebratory themes of its Biblical namesake, Song of Songs is a touching evocation of a world that no longer exists. With its exquisite, yet unsentimental, images and soundtrack songs of heartbreaking beauty, though this be a story tinged with sadness, it is one ever redeemed by hope. - Charlie Cockey
