The Mask You Live In

The Mask You Live In

Running time: 75 mins

Boys will be boys….really? Much has been written and filmed about society and media's stereotypes, expectations and limitations of girls and women - from body image to career opportunity. Less has been said, studied and filmed about the male in contemporary society. Jennifer Siebel Newsom (Miss Representation, Sundance 2011) gives boys their due. Compared to girls, research shows that boys in the U.S. are more likely to be diagnosed with a behavior disorder, prescribed stimulant medications, fail out of school, binge drink, commit a violent crime, and/or take their own lives. The Mask You Live In asks: As a society, how are we failing our boys? "Being expected to "man up" from a very young age exacts a heavy price on boys, and this project reveals how our current course of male identity needs to be altered." - L.V.
