Apart Together
Running time: 93 mins
Today, 50 years after losing her to history, Liu Yangsheng returns to Shanghai to reclaim the woman he loves.
Separated in 1949 by the Nationalist Army?s retreat to Taiwan, Liu?s return to find his beloved Yu-e creates profound dilemmas for her, her common-law, husband Lu Shenmin, and each of her children. Filled with knowing silences, gentle humor and a benign sense of the absurd (?I never thought that my first wedding photo would be for my divorce!?), this wise, heartfelt film evokes the Japanese master Ozu as it examines one complex family?s relationships ? not least that between the two old men, once soldiers on opposite sides of the civil war, both still in love with the same woman.
Those who loved the Polish film ?A Time to Die? (Cinequest, 2008) will find a similar sensibility here, as ?highly distinguished actors hold the fort with calibrated performances that only come with age.? (Maggie Lee, Hollywood Reporter)
