Speechless

Running time: 100 mins

Mothers test their sons in many ways. Jan is a 55-year-old successful novelist at the peak of his career. When his 85-year-old vivacious and witty mother, Josée, suffers a massive stroke, she suddenly turns into a woeful child with a gibberish speech. It is a great shock for Jan to see his flamboyant mother rendered so helpless and deteriorated. Tasked with taking care of her and confronted with a fast-approaching deadline for his novel, Jan has to question his priorities. As Jan reflects on their lives together, the harsh and tender memories bring the family closer. Based on award-winning novelist Tom Lanoye’s novel, Speechless is a beautiful homage to the author’s mother and his relationship with her which will leave you, well, speechless. – Pratibha Kelapure Sponsored by Applied Materials Foundation
