Silent Cinema - FAUST
Running time: 116 mins
Friday, March 9th, 7pm at the California TheatreIn this impressive horror-fantasy film by director F.W. Murnau, Mephisto tempts the devout alchemist Faust with promises of youth, love and power. The price? Faust's eternal soul. Emil Jannings is magnificent as Mephisto, the devil who is always lurking, promising wonderful things that are never quite what they should be, all extracted for a terrible price.
Murnau, who had directed the silent German masterpieces Nosferatu and The Last Laugh, left Germany for Hollywood after completing Faust. His next film, Sunrise, is considered one of the greatest silent films ever made. Faust is every bit as impressive as Murnau's best films, with its themes of love and death, good and evil.
