Latino Film Celebration: Fibra Optica
Running time: N/A
March 2, 7:00pm (UA). Special Screening of Fibra Optica, an intense thriller of high-tech intrigue and political corruption from Mexican director Francisco Athi?. Included in this celebration is a party after the showing, hosted by the Mexican American Center for Latino Arts (MACLA) and catered by Casa Castillo Restaurant. An experienced director of both film and television projects, Francisco Athi? has studied cinema in London and the prestigious Centro de Capacitaci?n Cinematogr?fica in Mexico City. His work has been exhibited internationally, and Fibra Optica has most recently been shown at the Montreal World Festival and the Portland Film Festival. Athi? is one of the brightest new visionaries in the new wave of Mexican filmmakers. Mexico City, where the pseudo-modernization of communications and information is abused as a means of intimidation. Where the burst of digital technology is incorporated into the use of power and corruption in every day life. Where information is not only shared in streets, cafes and bars, but also by fax, email, cellular and telephone networks. Then comes a phone call inviting Marco Antonio, a young journalist, to write about the murder of a prominent labor union leader. Unemployed, and with little hope of finding a job, he accepts. At the same time, a lawyer, Maga?a, is hired in the same way, by telephone, to defend the murder suspect, who was the dead man's mistress. From then on, they are guided by the anonymous Voice on the phone, which advises, spies, and issues orders, giving each one his own assignment, until they are trapped by their own efforts. In Fibra Optica, Athi? has created a passionate love story and political thriller, exposing the corruption and technological intrigue that has become a part of everyday life in Mexico. After the show, join us for a fiesta of food and drink at MACLA, including an excerpt of Teatro Vision's latest production, The House on Mango Street, which plays Feb. 25 - Mar. 14. - Jeffrey Vargas.
