Latino Celebration
Running time: N/A
Over the past five years, Latino Cinema has provided much of the world's most exciting and creative independent film. Last season, Cinequest presented its first celebration of Latino Film. The audience and critical reception to this program of films and filmmakers from Mexican, Latin-American, Spanish, and Hispanic-American perspectives was extraordinary. Hence Cinequest is very pleased to present a new Latino Celebration that is even bigger and more exciting than last year. Over the week of the San Jose Film Festival, people interested in Latin/Hispano culture and filmmaking will have a chance to view exceptional films from Mexican, Hispano-American, Bolivian, Spanish, Uruguan, and Argentinean directors. Cinequest is honored to include work from two legends of Latino film: Eliseo (Dark Side of the Heart, Man Facing SouthEast) Subiela's breathtaking and magical Don't Die Without Telling Me Where You're Going (page? ) will be a marquee screening and Luis Valdez' (Zoot Suit, La Bamba, Cisco Kid) will be the featured filmmaker of the section. We are also presenting the films of some new names that demand attention: Juan Carlos Valdivia whose Jonah and the Pink Whale is as good of a debut as you'll find; acclaimed filmmaker Lordes Portillo who will present her engaging The Devil Never Sleeps; Luis R. Vera who has made the stunner Miss Amerigua and Jose Luis Garci whose Cradle Song will be a likely favorite of the Latino Celebration section. There's a feast of film screenings to chose from, but that's not all: Join us at the UA Theatre Saturday, February 3rd at 7:00 p.m. for the Latino Party which will include Luis Valdez presenting Zoot Suit followed by a fully catered reception catered by Una Mas.
