North American Premiere "I try to laugh at things which make us sad. I want comedy and tragedy to go hand in hand." -- Teddy Moskov. Rhapsody in White is one of the most successful Bulgarian films in recent years. Director Teddy Moskov calls it a "fight against the triviality of life," and, indeed, there has never been anything quite like it. Funny yet sad, antic yet delicate, it virtually invents its own genre as it goes along. Working in the world of comedy clubs and puppet shows, Dana (Maya Novoselska) is already saddled with a skewed view of the world. From day to day, she wages a war against the realities of life by escaping into her own fantasy world, where such items as sock puppets and railroads achieve magical status. As the outside world closes in on her, however, how long will Dana be able to keep her innocence intact? An often breathtaking tightrope act, Rhapsody in White is a whimsical resurrection of the innocence of comedy and a bow to silent cinema, with references to Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Jacques Tati. In an amazing central performance, Novoselska bridges the ridiculous and the sublime. - Fernando F. Croce
