Occasionally, when a young cow has a particularly painful and protracted delivery, she will shun her calf, a potential disaster for the nomads, for whom every animal is precious. The Story of the Weeping Camel is the amazing story of one such birth, and the astonishing methods employed to coax the mother to accept her child. A graduation project for two students in the film school in Munich - one Italian, the other Mongolian - the tiny student crew traveled thousands of kilometers in the Gobi desert. What they found is more perfect than they could have hoped for. Since its premiere, the film has won awards at almost every festival in which it has appeared and is now the first Mongolian film ever to be submitted for an Oscar. There are occasional films that have the beauty, truth and clarity to enlarge our perception of the world in which we live. A rare find, The Story of the Weeping Camel is spectacular, mesmerizing and bound to be much discussed among those who venture to see it. - Charlie Cockey.
