It has been said that where there is love there is life. Liberty: 3 Stories About Life & Death provides both with a heartfelt exploration of a lesbian family of friends and lovers coping with the death of two members. Told in three parts, the film by Pam Walton demonstrates the power of film to bring back the deceased and the pain, joy and determination of living and dying.A tremendous sense of humor and fun binds this community together. Every occasion is cause for a celebration of life and love. A retirement party is not complete without songs and an 8-foot replica of the Statue of Liberty. Cake, Judy Garland and kisses cap off the ultimate bon voyage party. Even when one of these close friends begins chemotherapy, the ladies make an event full of laughter and music out of shaving her head. Social conservatives may attempt to portray the gay community as outside of the rights and joys of the "traditional" family but in the end, Liberty proves that everyone should be so lucky to have such love, support and sense of community as these women. Where there is love, there is life and where there are both, there is liberty. Meredith Sherter Benston MAVERICK COMPETITION
