An extremely touching journey, magnificently blending captivating drama with moments of humor, Sevan Matossian's arresting Our House follows the year-long trials of three people living in the same house, struggling to overcome mental disabilities in attempts to mainstream into society. Laura is a young woman dealing with Tourette's. A victim of sexual abuse, she is confused about her gender and is considering a sex change. Tim S. is a gentle soul who wants to be friends with everyone. He loves to sneak cigarettes and desperately wants to quit the Special Olympics. Tim W. is an alcoholic who has severe behavioral problems and will not curb his drinking, even at the risk of getting kicked out of the house. The joys, pains, and burdens of the residents are on full display, as Matossian finds and expresses their most endearing qualities along with their strengths. Both working and living in the house to vividly portray not only the anger and frustration of trying to cope in an intolerant culture, Matossian also captures the triumphs of growth and fulfillment-offering a richly layered tale full of depth and optimism. - Sandy Wolf.
