The Sea That Thinks is amazing, yet almost impossible to describe, for it is truly a mind bending experience that plays with our expectations as an audience. Over ten years in the planning, then three more years in the shooting, it is the definition of a personal, independent, and, of course, maverick film. From the very first scene, the viewer is presented with an astounding array of illusions and mind games, all intent on forcing a confrontation with the impossible ambiguities of reality. Certainly there is a plot: a man is writing a film about a man pondering the essence of perception in the form of a film he's writing about a man writing a film - and, of course, the film he's making is the film we're watching. Or is it? Answers only lead to more questions. Director Gert de Graaff's debut feature is a profoundly provocative film, which will keep you fascinated and thinking about it long afterwards. We are proud to include The Sea That Thinks, a winner of many international awards, in this year's Cinequest. Frankly, there is no other film in the festival quite like it. Reviewed by Charlie Cockey
