The Crossing (Boku no Ojisan)

Running time: N/A

A coming-of-age story deeply rooted in the spirit and culture of Japan, The Crossing reaches past Japanese traditions and customs to explore universal themes. Set amid the bustle of Tokyo and the quiescence of rural Japan, the film follows the story of two young men dealing with the frustrations of living in a society drifting unmoored. Koji is a 29-year-old graphic designer living in Tokyo, depressed by the ceaseless buzz and hum of urban culture. His gloom is heightened by the death of his father and troubles with his love life. Meanwhile his young nephew, Takuya, is arrested for attempted armed robbery of a post office. He returns home after being sentenced to probation but rejects the guidance and counsel of his uncle and father. Award-winning director Higashi Yoichi (Village of Dreams, Cinequest 1997) helms this moody, highly symbolic film. His subtle touch can be felt throughout the story as he deftly navigates his characters through a broad spectrum of emotions. Ultimately, The Crossing leaves the impression of the river that plays such a prominent healing role in the story--its simple, delicate existence acts to beat back the roil of modern living. --Matt McKillop
