Ron Havilio is a Jerusalem filmmaker who has dedicated the last twelve years of his life to one film. Fragments: Jerusalem consists of film clips, photos, home movies and drawings conveying the tumultuous richness that is Jerusalem, past and present. Culled from 70 hours of film and seven years in the editing, this is an exquisite composite memory piece and majestic historical mosaic, woven together by the director's own childhood memories. Highly personal yet vast in scope, Jerusalem tells its monumental story through Havilio's immediate family and traces their personal history back 500 years, encompassing the community and the indefatigableness of the Jewish people, its ordinary citizens, wise men, kabbalists and artists. Depicting centuries of change and its impact, the film presents the viewer with the rich collective wisdom of a land and its people that is at once as perplexing as it is understandable. Perhaps the elderly photographer musing about his youth sums up the filmÕs look at a fascinating culture: "Then we were young and beautiful. Now we are only beautiful." Winner of the Forum Prize at the 1998 Berlin Film Festival and the Grand Prize at the Yamagata International Documentary Festival in Japan, Fragments: Jerusalem is a true work of art. --Tim Sika
