It's the 1960s. Woodstock consummates the ''flower power'' generation and U.S. Congress witnesses an all-time high in protest marches. But things were a little different in Ecuador with a strict military discipline and a much more violent clash of political parties. This is where we find Galo Galvez, a charismatic Communist Party leader whose life luster is not deterred by his inability to walk. However, his party is narrowminded, and one probably can't even cut the bureaucracy with a Ginsu knife. To confound things, Galo's fiancee, Margamaria, defines their relationship by control. Enter ''The Writer,'' Galo's best friend and author of Galo's story. And if matters couldn't be more problematic, ''The Writer'' can't seem to tell fact from fiction. Camilo Luzuriaga's Between Marx and a Naked Woman is a wonderful and fantastic comedy full of intrigue, satire and magical realism. And although the film examines the world through a farcical eye, its characters and their representations are quite relevant to the desire in everyone to try to change the world. --Mike Rabehl
