Winner of three Academy Awards and eight nominations after its release in 1977, Fred Zinnemann's Julia, based on Lillian Hellman's memoirs, certainly deserves the title ''classic''. Julia covers those years in the 1930s when Lillian attained fame with the production of her first play The Little Foxes on Broadway. Not surprisingly, the film centers on Hellman's relationship with her lifelong friend, Julia. It is a relationship that goes beyond mere acquaintance, and one for which the word ''love'' seems appropriate. After becoming a celebrated playwright, Lillian is invited to a writers' conference in Russia, and Julia enlists Lillian en route to smuggle money through Nazi Germany which will assist in the anti-Fascist cause. Soon, entangled in a web, their lives are endangered. Walter Murch garnered an Academy Award nomination for his elegant editing work on Julia, and it's obvious from the poeticism of images that an effective bond was struck between him and Zinnemann. Cinequest is proud to present Julia as it was meant to be seen.
