Mary Paradox and Grace

Running time: N/A

For artists and poets, Mary Paradox and Grace describes one person's approach as an answer to those who need inspiration in the pursuit of a meaningful life. Very few films successfully blend art, philosophy, poetry and music, but to gain a full appreciation of an artist requires just such a blend. In Karen Watson's film, the life and thoughts of the artist Mary Holmes, a founding professor at U.C. Santa Cruz, are gracefully combined to produce a rounded picture of a woman who has devoted her long life to art without many of the compromises that are usually required along the way. Through juxtaposition of her striking paintings, quotes from many thinkers and writers, and a totally appropriate musical background we come to understand what drives this artist as well as all serious artists. This method of exposition parallels Mary's artistic approach with its use of nonlinear time and thought. Watson's approach to representing Holmes' photography and paintings add immeasurably to the beautiful depiction of an artist's love of her work and her appreciation of life, and the viewer truly understands the motivation and the accomplishments of this remarkable woman. The director and writer, Karen Watson, is based in Santa Cruz. This is her first feature length film. --Ed Soohoo
